Give a little, get a laugh – StANd uP 4 Street KiDs
November 21, 2007 10:30am
THE Laugh Resort Comedy Club and Comedy Lounge present the third annual StANd uP 4 Street KiDs.
Twelve of Perth’s premiere stand-up comedians will once again be assembled, on Saturday 8 December at the Hyde Park Hotel, to raise money for Perth Inner City Youth Service (PICYS) who look after hundreds of our state’s young homeless people every year.
This marks the third year of collaboration between The Laugh Resort (Australia’s only known incorporated association of comedians, based in Northbridge, WA) and West Leederville-based not-for-profit organization PICYS. Stand Up 4 Street Kids was initiated in 2005 by then Chairs of each organization, Don Smith and David Berry, to highlight the youth homelessness issue in Western Australia.
"Despite how young people are sometimes portrayed, there are good young people out there who simply need a helping hand," said Event Coordinator Dianah Star. PICYS provides that – mainly in the form of housing, but also offering assistance with literacy, budgeting, and other everyday skills.
"When I’m spruiking shows in Northbridge I see young people being ‘moved along’" said Star. "I often wonder where they end up at night… This gig is our (industry’s) contribution to making sure its somewhere safe."
Current PICYS Manager Charles Snelleksz-Mathelot says if there’s ever a worse time to be without a roof over your head, its the holiday season. "Everyone (at PICYS) really enjoys Stand up for Street Kids", he said. "The joint effort of Perth comedians, who put on a great show for us, gives our young people something to really look forward to."
Last year’s fundraiser paid for property maintenance, physical recreation activities, and a Christmas party for the young people PICYS assists.
This year’s show features a dozen stellar local acts donating their time and comedy talent, as well as interstate and overseas guests, including: SARGE (Nova 9s); Matt Dyktynski (UK); Werzel; WA Raw Comedy Winners Xavier Susai (2007), Josh Makinda (2003) and Xavier Michelides (2001); ’07 Raw finalists Zack Adams and John Robertson; James DeLeo (Sunday Arts, ABC TV); Jack Tandy; and Ben Wright.
